The winter sales are drawing to a close and the first of the spring collections are starting to appear in stores and online. Over the past few months, I have stopped following fashion blogs, so I have no idea what the major trends are supposed to be this spring. I did a quick search online and found this collage.
Does any of it speak to you? Hmm...

One of my style resolutions this year has been to stop subscribing to popular fashion blogs: Atlantic-Pacific, The Chloe Conspiracy, Wendy's Lookbook and 9to5Chic. After a while, I started to think that none of it was actually relevant to my own life. I also started to wonder whether it was genuine style or a clever marketing scheme, seeing as so much of the clothing and accessories were gifted to the blogger. More importantly, I realized that looking at these blogs was just unhealthy for my closet, my bank account and my sense of self. I have been busy selling off all the items that I purchased "under the blog influence".
Instead of looking at blogs which seem to be advertising in disguise, I am going to stick with looking at the source material - runway collections and company websites - and then go with my gut instinct. And, I am going to continuing finding inspiration from fellow bloggers like Dani of DaniBP Mop Philosopher, Tabitha of Bourbon & Pearls, and others I have "met" in my online travels.

Last week, J. Crew released part of their Collection line for pre-ordering and yesterday, J. Crew released the first of their regular spring collection. Here are my favourites.
White in contrasting textures
I don't know if it's the effect of the marketers but I always find that once January has begun, I am drawn to a pale palette, so light and refreshing after the dark colours of autumn.
I love the idea of contrasting a delicate texture like lace against something harder, like denim or leather. The way this is styled with the Panama hat and sneakers gives it a hint of Jazz Age, one of my favourite eras in fashion (see earlier styling projects here and here).
Digital prints
Digital printing techniques are a fairly recent development in fashion, championed by designers like Erdem and Mary Katrantzou. I am fascinated by the surreal quality of digital prints. J. Crew has come out with some spectacular prints in the past and this winter, they started doing digital prints, beginning with this stunning black & white photo floral print.
For spring, they have done another digital print on a shift dress.
They have entitled this print "hummingbird floral", although on closer inspection, I can only see parrots and butterflies in the foliage. Whatever, it is beautiful. I have nowhere to wear such a dress but it is nice to look at. Hopefully they will come out with a skirt or a blouse in the same pattern.
Something new, something blue
My last pick is actually a beauty trend. J. Crew is hugely influential not only with they way they style clothes but also when it comes to beauty. A few years ago, they introduced the look below, consisting of a seemingly bare face with only the lips filled in with shockingly bright orangey-red matte lipstick.
It was a huge success and much copied by other retailers (see earlier review of the Poppy King for J. Crew lipstick here). Last year during my fashion styling courses, J. Crew was cited repeatedly by the instructors as being an industry leader, the one to watch and follow (the instructors themselves are stylists for one of Canada's largest mail order catalogs, so they ought to know).
Over the past few seasons, J. Crew has attempted to evolve beyond the smash success of that look with pastel neon lipsticks from FACE Stockholm, but it never caught on - I suspect pastel neons are not so universally flattering as the original orangey-red colour.
Anyway, what has caught my eye this time is the introduction of turquoise blue eyeliner, while the lips are downplayed with a natural soft pink.
I love how the flash of turquoise blue on the eyelids draws focus to the eyes. I saw a version of this in real life on a sales associate at Sephora and was immediately taken with how the turquoise colour makes the rest of the face look paler and more translucent.
I was also reminded of the beauty trend report in the Sept. 2011 issue of U.S. Vogue which I wrote about here, but J. Crew's take looks less hard edged/punk rock and more like a modern version of the white eyeliner of the 1960s - startling but still very pretty, feminine and flattering. I would like to try out a more discreet version of this, perhaps with a gel eyeliner.
What are your picks from the spring collections that are being rolled out right now? And where do you look for your style inspiration?

It's funny how there are so many things that spread like wildfire across the blogging world...gifting items to bloggers is a sure-fire way to generate sales these days (few trends come to mind - the colorful coach tassel bags, stella & dot spike bracelet etc).
ReplyDeleteStill - I need my dose of fashion bloggers for inspiration. I'm not good at taking inspiration from the runway LOL - I need it broken down into simple steps for me! In terms of magazines - I prefer people stylewatch as it's everyday outfits rather than editorial looks.
And in terms of blogging - I prefer the blogs where people post what they ACTUALLY wore (i.e. a work outfit) rather than an overstyled statement look - it might look pretty but it's impractical for me.
Of the blogs you mentioned - I only follow Wendy's Lookbook - because she's just so cute and I love her hair & makeup :-)
Hi Ella, thanks for your comment! I was following Atlantic-Pacific etc. for a while but after a while, it started to feel a bit tiresome - it all started to like costumes, not at all relevant to the average person. Who actually wears 4" heels and piles of jewelry in real life? Coming from years of working in a lab, I couldn't handle all that stuff jangling around my neck and hands. Plus, wearing heels to all day would (1) wreck my feet and knees and (2) I'd break either my ankles or snap the heels off. I also prefer reading blogs by people who talk about what they actually wear in their day-to-day life.
DeleteI have been thinking about the same thing and for me it is also not good to look at blogs like atlantic/paciic,because it leaves me frustrated with myself.
ReplyDeleteIn my everyday life i just dont need that kind of dressing, plus i dont have the funds for it.
I have become better to buy not for my fantasy life, but for my real life!
I really like all the geometrics and today i ordered the colorblock cardigan to fill that "geometric void".
Love that you post more often!
Thank you, Ina! I am trying to get back in the swing of writing more often. I think writing more will help dispel the lack of inspiration I have been feeling lately. You are right, it is much better to dress for real life than a fantasy life!
DeleteAfter two years in blogsphere, I unsubscribed all of fashion blogs due to similar reasons. With a weak mind that i used to have, I ended up purchasing stuff i didn't really have true interest in or didnt fit my lifestyle. My biggest regret must be a Chanel bag when that Chanel craze hit the community. Every girl i knew had to have it. It is almost ridiculous. Sure it is a classic and timeless piece but it doesnt quite fit my lifestyle. Oh well i will just save it for my little one. After paying $$$$ for a life lesson, since then i learn to stay strong to my true style and say no or think through several times even on the cheap items.
ReplyDeleteI personally admire those ladies who have such talents in styling and running highly successful blogs but we as readers should think through as how we can adapt their styles /inspiration to fit ours before we ebd up in debts or junk pile . Great post Louise.
Hi Nelah, thank you for your comment. Don't worry about the Chanel bag. As you said, it was a life lesson. I also succumbed to crazes for "It" items, fueled by blogger mania. Afterwards I realized that none of it really suited me. I really regret wasting the money and I have since been selling all of those things to recoup the money I spent on them. I figure by sticking to just looking at Vogue or company websites, and thinking carefully about my personal style, I won't be drawn into that herd mentality again.
DeleteHi Louise,
ReplyDeleteCannot agree with you more - I have unsubscribed from many of the same bloggers as it was simply marketing - there did not appear to be very much in the interaction with the readers ever. Ah well..
Since i am on a self-imposed budget this year, after the mad Marie Antoinette phase of 2012, I am being reallty choosy! I had the same thought about the hummingbird dress - I think I see one, but I cannot be sure and it is cerainly well camouflaged!
You have me excited about the eyeline, as I actually have that colour, picked it up in NYC at the Times Square sephora when my daughter and I discovered Urban Decay for the first time and were attracted to all of the colour! I am going to get it out tomorrow! will be a nice pop of colour for these cold dreary days!
Hi WMM,
DeleteI had to laugh at your Marie Antoinette comment! I am on a strict budget too this year - I am limiting myself to a small portion of the proceeds of my Ebay sales and that is it. The good thing about avoiding the popular blogs is that I don't get tempted! If you try out the turquoise blue eyeshadow, let us know how it goes!
Hi Louise, welcome back, I miss your posts. Of all the high fashion blogs I follow Atlantic-Pacific because I actually have a lot of the clothes that she wears (I mean that I bought BEFORE she ever posted about them) so I think that besides the high heels that I cannot do in my everyday life we have a similar sense of style or at least we buy the same clothes! If every once in a while it gives envie of buying something she is wearing (it happened only once actually, a sweatshirt that I didn't get and I am still regretting) ot is OK because I know that it would be me.
ReplyDeleteAh, that dress! I did preorder it so I will have a post soon. I have at least two occasions this year and it is different from all I have so I caved. Although the parrots could be too similar to my digital print Zara dress (which is a completely different colors, but still!) Anyway, I wanted to see it IRL and it was the only way, I don't even think the stores are going to get it.
Hi Ema, thank you very much!! I am trying to write more in hopes of dispelling my writer's block and feeling of lack of inspiration. I much prefer reading your blog as well as others like Dani's or Tabitha's, over a blog such as Atlantic-Pacific. You have thoughtful commentary, whereas with Atlantic-Pacific, there is zero commentary and after a while, it feels like a repetitive advertisement of all these very costumey outfits.
DeleteI cannot wait to see your review of the hummingbird dress. I am sure it will be lovely on you!
Good morning, Louise. I enjoyed your post today very much. I read often, but haven't commented. I totally agree, 100%, with your comment about the fashion bloggers Atlantic-Pacific, etc. A/P can dress like that because she works in the fashion industry, doesn't she? I believe she works for Tory Burch. Frankly, I feel her look is now repetitive, rarely anything new. Same jewelry - more of the freebies from David Yurman to pile on; same purses, same big coats, all kinds of "sunnies", and I always wish she would get a good trim/haircut, etc. I have unsubscribed from many of these blogs as well. I do find it a bit slanted that they accept items and then "advertise" them. I love original looks, and outfits of the day as well.
ReplyDeleteAs for the Spring offerings, I just don't think geometrics work on a curvy body. I tried the pink/black silk blouse from J Crew last season and it did not look great on me. Same goes for too many stripes. Has to be the right colors and size of stripes. I am enjoying the spring colors, and have ordered several items to see IRL from the newest roll out. I do like the photo floral prints - bought the black/white print top from JC for the holidays, and have pre-ordered the spring sweatshirt with the pink florals.
As for the make up and JC looks, I agree as well. I saw some comments on the "green eye liner only" look on the mothership blog, and had to laugh. The cosmetic companies are showing many blues/greens/turquoise colors for spring and I am already wearing the blue/turquoise shadows and liners from Lancome. I LOVE them. Have received many compliments from check out clerks (like at Staples, not Nordstrom, where they compliment everything) and think that the look will be popular.
I don't really think fashion blogs have truly 'inspired' me, I just study the combinations of colors, or patterns, or mix of styles and if I see something I like, I recreate it with items I have or love. But I did feel I was wasting time viewing dozens of blogs that were all getting to feel the same. Same purse, same shoes (heels) or "sunnies" - gosh I am sick of those, lol!!!
Great post, Louise!! Have a good weekend!
Hi Suzy, thank you for your comment! I am glad you enjoyed the post. I seemed to have touched a chord with people when I said that I unsubscribed from all the major fashion blogs. After several months of reading the blogs, I started feeling like I was being suckered into this crazed herd mentality. It was good to shake it off! I personally think the turquoise and mint eyeliners will be a big hit as it is so striking. I am going to check out the spring collections from the cosmetic companies to see what is available!
DeleteHi Louise! Great post. Whites and stripes are my favorite trends this season, because they're both fairly classic outfit builders. I find I go to places like Net a Porter, My Theresa and My Wardrobe rather than trendy bloggers like AP for inspiration. And then it's mainly for color combination ideas. I also enjoy checking out the designer runway showings.
ReplyDeleteI can't do the turquoise eye color, but I've always liked dark blue eye shadows. And J.Crew's 2009 cover is still one of my favorite makeup looks.
Have a great weekend! :)
Hi ABC, thank you for your comment! I really enjoy your blog as you have such a great eye for outfits and colours - it's an excellent source of inspiration. I sometimes look at Net-A-Porter but I find the huge selection to be a little overwhelming. I am going to take a closer look at My Theresa and My Wardrobe - thanks for sharing!
DeleteTo me, those you named are what I think of as professional fashion bloggers. I look at their posts every so often to see interesting ideas but I've never become obsessed to get something or want to duplicate their outfits. I think I edit them in my mind, no way on those shoes but that kind of jacket with similar top and jeans would work in my life. I can't do the turquoise eyeliner and I still love the poppy king lips.
ReplyDeleteHi tiffany rose, thanks for your comment. When I first entered the world of blogging a couple years ago, I was completely naive and also at a vulnerable stage, having just had my first child and not really having a strong sense of self. At the time, I wasn't aware of the concept of "professional" fashion bloggers, and naively thought they were regular folk, not people who blogged for a living. However, I started to wonder after seeing so much of the wardrobe was "courtesy of". In any event, after many months of subscribing to these blogs, it started to feel very repetitive and old, and nowadays it is very rare that I see anything inspiring there. I find that true inspiration comes from people who blog about their own wardrobe and outfits, things they chose for themselves as an expression of their own style.
DeleteI know what you mean about the big bloggers - I always treat them like I would about seeing a pictorial in a fashion mag. Really pretty and inspirational, but most times not realistic for my life. But I can take bits and pieces from their looks, a color combo or a silhouette, and draw inspiration from that into something more wearable for regular me.
ReplyDeleteHi Lisa! Your blog is so successful, I think you might be entering the realm of the big bloggers but I love that you keep it real and totally relevant. You always put a fresh and pretty spin on whatever outfit you are wearing. Your sparkling personality always shines through in every post. There's a level of openness and honesty there which I appreciate (and I am sure others do). In contrast, other big bloggers come off as an artificial product, carefully manufactured and groomed by a PR machine. Thanks for visiting - I really appreciate it!
DeleteHi Louise, I miss you! I emailed you...did you get it?
ReplyDeleteAnyway, great post - I agree - a lot of blogs feel like magazines to me - pretty to look at but not relevant to me in anyway. Plus, these days I don't have time to read blogs they way I used to to I prefer to read blogs I will actually get something out of :)
Hey Elaine, I did get your message - will respond asap! Thanks for your comment. Yes, most of the big name blogs are so slick and highly produced, it doesn't really feel genuine anymore, and that was the initial draw for me in the first place - seeing "real" street style. That's also the reason I don't even bother reading the major blogs like The Sartorialist or Garance Doré anymore.
DeleteHello Louise
ReplyDeleteThis is a very interesting post and while I cannot comment on the fashion blogs, as I do not follow them. I have always loved to keep up withe the major designers, Valentino the house of Chanel etc. Exquisite tailoring appeals to me as does good fabric. The eyeshadow you feature looks interesting and you will carry it off beautifully.
To a week of joy and pastel colours
Helen
i love this post. i only subscribe to wendy's lookbook (i have followed her since she started posting) but i haven't been clicking through to her blog recently. not sure why i lost interest but it did all seem rather unhealthy for my budget and sense of self. i like the idea of looking at the source material and creating your own interpretation. i think that's a much better way of being original and coming up with your own sense of style. thanks for this post! x
